My name is Ed Garrett and I’m a Fulbright Fellow from the US working with the Hungarian Research Institute of Organic Agriculture. I spent a year in Detroit, Michigan helping out with Farm to School and Urban Agriculture projects during a VISTA assignment as a Community and Economic Development Specialist. Before that, I’m from Davis, California where I started an Urban Farm Training Center between graduating from UC Davis and heading out to Michigan.
Don’t get to thinking I’m a young idealist. The truth is I farmed and was an agriculture advisor for thirty years before going back to school! I practice SPIN-Farming (Small Plot INtensive) and am a SPIN-Corps advisor.
Why permaculture? People hear about my methods and say “oh, you do permaculture.” Nope, I practice logical nature based production developed over forty years of counsel from my grandfather, old farmers in California and across the U.S., and my own experiences with livestock, irrigated and non-irrigated crops and making a living where it doesn’t rain for most of the year.
I’m a life-long learner, so am here to see what permaculture really is!
