Good Sustainable Design Can Save the World

Sustainable living has progressed from basic recycling and conservation to innovative technologies and designs. Sustainable design has already exploded on the scene for architects and engineers who are learning to build in harmony with the natural environment using renewable natural resources. The new green building designs use a more dynamic approach to internal building systems working in conjunction with the natural environment.

The sustainable design concept begins with ways to reduce the negative environmental impact our buildings have and improve the balance between the natural environment and indoor living space. This is achieved through creative and purposeful designs that integrate the main systems within a building. The heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) design, plumbing design, and electrical design can be constructed to complement one another and work together to produce an energy efficient model.

HVAC systems can be designed to include alternative sources for heating such as natural passive solar heat through something as simple as window placement. The design of window placement can also promote the natural flow of air throughout the building.

Plumbing systems can be designed to use both active and passive solar heating for hot water. I did an MSc in the Theory and practice of sustainable Design in Architecture and was disappointed to discover that although they achieve most of what this article says, they only look at the building in isolation, energy in energy out. And although I’m glad progress has been made I am also sad that the environment in which a building sits is not considered in the design. I agree that it is about integration but the environment can also be integrated and used to enhance both the structure and the environment around it. I wanted to conduct research into the effect of wind on trees and associated air flows on an area at the micro and macro levels within a landscape to best assist renewable energy sources, placement and use at the local, community and national level. But, as I found out not much research in this area has taken place and although I joined a specific university as they had a wind tunnel, on joining found out they’d just sold it and therefore was unable to do the research I wanted. Hopefully someone will eventually look into this subject and surrounding influences.
